Herbert Smerkins —Rochester

Herbert Smerkins, 90, formerly of Rochester, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011.

Services were officiated by Rabbi Michelle Werner on Aug. 7, 2011, at noon in Rochester at the Oakwood Cemetery.

Lunch immediately followed the service at B’nai Israel Synagogue.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 20 years, Esther Golob Smerkins; parents, Herman and Rose; and

sister, Shirley. He is survived by stepchildren, Brian and wife Sandy Golob, Terry Golob, Lynn Phillips and Bart

Phillips; grandchildren, Mark, Freddie, Scott, Laura and Samantha; and cousins and many loving family friends.

Herb was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived many years in Chicago and in Rochester. Herb volunteered and joined

the Army Air Force and earned the rank of Captain. He served as a Pilot during WWII and flew the following

airplanes: B-26 Marauder, DC-3, P-47 Thunderbolt, F-38 Lightning and a P-51 Mustang. He flew many missions over

Europe. Herb graduated from Northwestern University at the top of his class with a degree in Business and became a

CPA.

He was an intelligent, gentle, kind and considerate man who loved music, reading, sailing, photography, bicycling,

home improvement projects, gadgets and electronics. He was devoted to his wife and family.

Herb enriched all of our lives and will be missed, but never forgotten.

Memorials preferred to B’nai Israel Synagogue (Rochester).

Shiva will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at 3440 Holly Lane N., Plymouth, MN 55447.

Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Home of Rochester is handling the arrangements.
